Our Approach

sshape’s design of the American Society of Association Executives’ (ASAE) new headquarters in Washington, DC, physically embodies their “Conscious Inclusion” initiative, transforming the traditional office into a universal, member-centered hub. Designed to serve employees, visitors, and association leaders alike, the multi-functional environment prioritizes neurodiversity, accessibility, and user autonomy. By moving away from rigid, standardized layouts, the design integrates intuitive navigation, organic geometries, and diverse acoustic and sensory settings—ranging from collaborative ideation spaces to quiet focus zones—ensuring that all individuals can choose how they best work, learn, and engage. The project successfully champions ASAE’s DEIA values through both spatial execution and strategic procurement, utilizing products from minority- and women-owned vendors. Advanced technology, including high-tech webinar and podcast studios, elevates the headquarters into a powerful digital and physical platform for industry learning, hosting, and broadcasting. Ultimately, the new headquarters proves that inclusive design is not merely an aesthetic layer, but a core organizational strategy that drives community belonging, operational relevance, and long-term mission success.
